Fort Hays Tech vs Hutchinson
HUTCHINSON, Kan. (Interstat) — Two men’s junior college basketball teams riding opposite waves of momentum will meet Saturday when the Hutchinson Blue Dragons host the Fort Hays Tech Trailblazers at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.
Both teams enter the 5 p.m. contest with identical 8-7 overall records, but recent form diverges sharply. Fort Hays Tech (8-7) arrives on a two-game winning streak, most notably a 77-75 road victory at Coffeyville on Thursday. Hutchinson (8-7), meanwhile, has dropped three consecutive games, including a 71-65 loss at Pratt on Wednesday.
The matchup features two of the region’s most dynamic individual talents. Fort Hays Tech is powered by forward Matija Otasevic, who is coming off a strong 17-point, 8-rebound, 3-block performance in the win over Coffeyville. Over his last four games, he has averaged 9.8 points and 7.5 rebounds.
Hutchinson will lean on the explosive scoring of guard Kyrell Shaw. Despite his team’s slump, Shaw has been prolific, pouring in 34 points in the loss to Pratt and 32 points in a Jan. 3 defeat at Colby. He averages 24.3 points per game over his last three outings.
The Trailblazers’ recent success has been a team effort. In the win over Coffeyville, Marquintez Dixon added 10 points and five rebounds, while Kuet Gatwech contributed 11 points and four rebounds.
For the Blue Dragons, finding consistent support for Shaw is critical. Asher Boney (7 points, 6 rebounds) and Lolo Rudolph (8 points) were secondary contributors against Pratt, but the team managed only 39 points in a Jan. 7 loss to Coffeyville.
Saturday’s contest represents a pivotal point in the season for both squads. Fort Hays Tech looks to solidify its turnaround and climb above .500, while Hutchinson desperately seeks to halt its skid and defend its home court in a tightly balanced conference race.
