Sierra vs Modesto

Top California Junior College Teams Set for Showdown

MODESTO, Calif. (Interstat) — Two of the state’s hottest men’s junior college basketball teams will clash Tuesday when the Sierra Wolverines visit the Modesto Pirates.

The non-conference matchup features Modesto (12-1), whose lone blemish was a 61-40 road loss to Cosumnes River on Dec. 30, and Sierra (10-3), winner of four straight. Game time is 7 p.m. PST.

The Pirates have been dominant at home and enter on a high note after routing Sacramento City 100-67 last Saturday. Their only other tight contest was an 85-82 road win over Columbia on Dec. 20. Modesto’s defense has been a cornerstone, holding opponents under 70 points in nine of their 13 games.

Sierra brings considerable momentum north after a 98-65 road victory over American River last Friday. The Wolverines’ three losses have all come on the road, including back-to-back defeats at San Mateo (65-52) and San Francisco (88-81) in mid-December. They have since rebounded with decisive wins, averaging 88.5 points during their current streak.

The Wolverines have shown a potent offense, scoring 100 or more points twice this season. However, they face a Modesto squad that has proven resilient, bouncing back from its only loss with a pair of wins by a combined 60 points.

This game serves as a preview of a rematch scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 3, at Sierra. Both teams open conference play later this week.

Tuesday’s winner will claim early bragging rights and valuable momentum heading into the heart of the California community college schedule.
