Moorpark vs West Valley
SARATOGA, Calif. (Interstat) — A hot-shooting Moorpark team will look to extend its win streak against a West Valley squad eager to rebound from a narrow loss when the junior college men’s basketball teams meet Saturday.
The Raiders (8-6) visit the Vikings (10-4) at West Valley College in a non-conference California Community College matchup tipping off at 5 p.m.
Moorpark enters riding a five-game winning streak, including a 92-60 road rout of Hartnell on Friday. The Raiders’ surge has been fueled by efficient offense, scoring 86 or more points in four of those victories.
A key catalyst has been guard Eric Kubel. The sophomore is coming off a 33-point, six-rebound performance in a 98-88 win over Fresno City on Dec. 30. Over his last six games, Kubel is averaging 18.3 points, showcasing a versatile scoring punch for the Raiders.
West Valley aims to shake off a 72-69 home loss to Feather River on Friday, which snapped a three-game win streak. The Vikings have been strong defensively for much of the season, holding opponents under 70 points in eight of their 10 victories. Their most dominant performance was a 97-47 win over Shasta on Dec. 19.
The Vikings boast a balanced attack and have proven capable of high-scoring outputs, eclipsing 90 points three times this season. They will test a Moorpark defense that has tightened during its streak, allowing an average of just 64.2 points over the last five games.
Historically, West Valley holds the advantage in overall record and will rely on home-court advantage. Moorpark, however, brings significant momentum and a go-to scorer in Kubel. The matchup pits the Raiders’ recent offensive firepower against the Vikings’ more established season-long consistency.
This game serves as a final tune-up before both teams dive into conference play next week. Moorpark opens Western State Conference North Division action against Santa Barbara on Jan. 7, while West Valley begins Coast Conference South Division play against Foothill the same day.
