Cuesta vs Redwoods

Corsairs Host Cougars in California Junior College Men’s Basketball Clash

EUREKA, Calif. (Interstat) — The College of the Redwoods Corsairs look to continue their winning ways against a familiar foe when they host the Cuesta College Cougars in a California community college men’s basketball game Saturday.

The matchup at Redwoods is a quick rematch, as the Corsairs (10-6) defeated the visiting Cougars (5-10) 81-64 on Dec. 19. Redwoods has won three of its last five games, though it is coming off a 101-81 road loss to Santa Rosa on Dec. 20.

Cuesta seeks to even the season series and build momentum after a forfeit win over Shasta on Dec. 30. Prior to that, the Cougars snapped a three-game skid with a 70-65 victory over Cypress on Dec. 29.

A key player for Cuesta will be guard Corbin Rossi, who is coming off a strong performance in the win over Cypress, scoring 17 points with seven rebounds in 38 minutes. Over his last five games, Rossi is averaging 14.6 points and 3.4 rebounds per contest.

The Corsairs, who hold a superior overall record, have shown a potent offense at times this season, scoring 95 points in a win over Fresno City and 99 against Mendocino. Their defense will aim to contain Rossi and improve upon a performance that saw them allow 101 points in their last outing.

For Cuesta, consistency remains the challenge. The Cougars have struggled on the road this season, with their most recent away victory coming on Dec. 13 against Oxnard.

Following this game, Redwoods opens Golden Valley Conference play at Shasta on Jan. 7. Cuesta’s next contest is at home against Allan Hancock on Jan. 10 to begin Western State Conference action.

Tipoff is scheduled for Saturday afternoon.
