Central Arizona vs Eastern Arizona

THATCHER, Ariz. (Interstat) — The Eastern Arizona Gila Monsters unleashed a dominant offensive performance, overwhelming the Central Arizona Vaqueros 101-78 in a men’s junior college basketball game Wednesday night.

Fueled by efficient scoring and a decisive rebounding advantage, Eastern Arizona improved to 10-7 on the season, while Central Arizona fell to 5-9.

The game’s most important stretch came early, setting a tone the Vaqueros could never alter. Eastern Arizona established immediate control with a blistering first-quarter display, outscoring Central Arizona 48-40. The Gila Monsters shot a remarkable 59.3% from the field in the opening period, connecting on 6 of 10 three-point attempts. This early explosion created a cushion that Central Arizona, despite its own 40-point quarter, could never seriously threaten. The Vaqueros’ defensive struggles persisted, and Eastern Arizona’s offensive machine only accelerated after halftime, winning the second quarter 53-38 to turn the game into a rout.

Eastern Arizona’s offensive execution was nearly flawless. The team shot 59.4% from the field overall and 54.2% from three-point range. They also won the possession battle, committing only six turnovers while forcing eight, and held a commanding 35-25 rebounding edge. Their offensive rating of 146.2 dwarfed Central Arizona’s 107.7, illustrating the vast efficiency gap.

Brad Ballinger led the Gila Monsters with a complete performance, scoring 19 points and dishing out 9 assists. Ryan Hunt recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, and Kahu Treacher added 16 points. The Eastern Arizona bench provided significant firepower, with Gio Obgaidze scoring 10 points and Ty Solomon adding 9.

Central Arizona was led by Nathan Wanjohi’s game-high 29 points. Shawn Spencer contributed 16 points and 4 assists, and Luke Leatherwood added 13 points. However, the Vaqueros could not match Eastern Arizona’s shooting efficiency, converting just 45.8% of their field goals and 34.8% of their three-point attempts. Their two total assists for the game highlighted a stagnant offensive approach against the Gila Monsters’ defense.

According to Interstat’s ELO system, Eastern Arizona entered the game with a 73.30 percent probability to win, a projection they exceeded with the lopsided victory.

Eastern Arizona next travels to face Cochise on Saturday. Central Arizona returns home to host Yavapai on Saturday. The two teams will meet again in Coolidge on Jan. 31.
