Feather River vs West Valley
SARATOGA, Calif. (Interstat) — A pivotal early-season California junior college men’s basketball matchup is set for Friday when the West Valley Vikings host the Feather River Golden Eagles.
Both teams enter the Jan. 2 contest with 10-win records, signaling a likely competitive non-conference clash. West Valley (10-3) has been dominant lately, winning its last three games by an average of 33 points, including a 70-36 road victory over San Mateo on Dec. 20. The Vikings’ defense has been stifling, holding opponents under 60 points in four of their last five outings.
Feather River (10-5) looks to rebound from an 86-75 home loss to Cabrillo on Dec. 20, which snapped a four-game winning streak. During that stretch, the Golden Eagles averaged 92 points per game.
A key player to watch is Feather River guard Armon Baker. He is coming off a 20-point, 8-assist performance in a 102-52 rout of Gavilan on Dec. 19 and averaged 15.3 points and 7.3 assists over his last three games. His playmaking will be critical against a formidable West Valley defense.
The Vikings have shown balance, with blowout wins over Shasta (97-47) and Napa Valley (91-54) highlighting their offensive capability to complement their defense. Their three losses have been by a combined 10 points, indicating they have been in every contest.
This game serves as a final tune-up before both teams dive into their respective conference schedules. Feather River begins Golden Valley Conference play on Jan. 7 at Butte, while West Valley opens Coast Conference-South action on Jan. 7 against Foothill.
Friday’s winner will gain significant momentum and a quality victory for their postseason resume. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m. at West Valley College.
