Santa Barbara vs Canyons
SANTA CLARITA, Calif. (Interstat) — The College of the Canyons Cougars used a dominant first quarter to build a substantial early lead and then held off a persistent Santa Barbara City College Vaqueros squad for an 85-72 victory in a non-conference men’s junior college basketball game Monday night.
The Cougars, playing at home, erupted for 50 points in the opening period, establishing a 15-point cushion they would never relinquish. The Vaqueros kept pace in the second quarter, scoring 37 points to Canyons’ 35, but could not overcome the early deficit.
The game’s most critical sequence occurred in the final minute of the first quarter, effectively sealing the contest’s trajectory. After Santa Barbara’s Jayden Fajardo committed a turnover with 20 seconds left, Canyons’ Muhammad Butler stole the ball and fed Wyatt Wilson for a layup. Wilson was fouled on the play and completed the three-point opportunity with a free throw. On the ensuing possession, Santa Barbara missed a three-pointer as time expired, sending the Cougars into the break with a commanding 50-35 advantage. That five-point swing in the closing seconds typified a first half where Canyons capitalized on Santa Barbara mistakes, scoring 14 points off 10 Vaqueros turnovers.
Canyons’ offensive efficiency proved decisive. The Cougars scored 85 points on 76 possessions for an offensive rating of 111.3, while Santa Barbara managed 72 points on 74 possessions, a rating of 97.0. The Cougars shot 47.1% from the field compared to the Vaqueros’ 44.2%. Though Santa Barbara made more three-pointers, hitting nine, their struggles at the free-throw line were glaring; they converted only 17 of 30 attempts. Canyons also won the battle in key hustle categories, securing 11 offensive rebounds to Santa Barbara’s six and forcing 14 turnovers while committing only eight.
James Reach led the Vaqueros with 19 points, including five three-pointers, in 23 minutes of action. Dante Calhoun added nine points off the bench for Santa Barbara. The Vaqueros’ record moved to 8-5.
Canyons showcased a balanced and deep attack. Dwayne Boston Jr. paced the Cougars with 15 points, six rebounds and two steals. Craig Irons provided a strong interior presence with 13 points and eight rebounds. Muhammad Butler was efficient off the bench, scoring 12 points, while Thomas Pickens also added 12. Wyatt Wilson contributed eight points, four assists and two steals. The win improved Canyons’ season record to 8-4.
The game was organized by the California Community College Athletic Association. According to Interstat’s ELO system, Canyons entered the contest with a 74.90 percent probability to win.
