Pensacola State vs Chipola
PENSACOLA, Fla. (Interstat) — A Panhandle Conference men’s junior college basketball showdown features one of the nation’s hottest teams hosting a squad looking to rebound from a tough loss when the Chipola Indians host the Pensacola State Pirates on Saturday, Jan. 10, 2026.
Chipola (14-2), riding a five-game winning streak, enters as one of the region’s top teams. Their most recent victory was a 64-61 road win at Bishop State on Monday, keyed by a 21-point performance from guard Desmond Kent Jr. The Indians have shown resilience, with three of their last five wins coming by single digits, including an overtime victory over Polk State.
Pensacola State (10-4) aims to bounce back from a heartbreaking 89-86 overtime home loss to Calhoun on Dec. 30. Despite the defeat, the Pirates showcased a high-powered trio: Sean Owens scored 29 points, Deven Bates posted a near-triple-double with 16 points, 11 assists and eight rebounds, and Joshua Middlebrooks added 20 points and eight rebounds.
Middlebrooks will be a key player to watch for the Pirates, while Kent Jr. leads the charge for Chipola. The matchup in the paint will be critical, as both teams feature productive forwards.
The Indians’ defense, which has held opponents to 61 points or fewer in three of their last five games, will be tested by a Pensacola State offense that surpassed 100 points twice in December. However, the Pirates have struggled with consistency, alternating wins and losses over their past six contests.
This marks the first of two regular-season meetings between the rivals. They will meet again in Pensacola on Jan. 28. Saturday’s contest offers Chipola a chance to solidify its conference standing early, while Pensacola State seeks a statement road win to ignite its conference schedule.
Tip-off is set for Saturday at Chipola’s Milton H. Johnson Health Center.
