Coastal Bend vs Kilgore

KILGORE, Texas (Interstat) — A stark contrast in trajectories will be on display Saturday when the surging Kilgore College Rangers host the struggling Coastal Bend College Cougars in a men’s junior college basketball matchup at Masters Gymnasium.

Kilgore (9-2) enters riding a three-game winning streak and sits among the region’s top teams. The Rangers are coming off an 81-63 road victory over Paris on Wednesday, a game in which they showcased balanced scoring and defensive prowess.

The Rangers are led by guard Kaiden Myers, who has been a model of consistency. Myers posted 17 points, six rebounds and five assists against Paris, mirroring a 17-point, six-assist performance in a 91-66 win over Lee on Jan. 3. His playmaking will be central to Kilgore’s offensive attack.

Conversely, Coastal Bend (1-8) seeks to halt a brutal skid. The Cougars are 1-7 since a season-opening victory over Ranger and are reeling from a 38-95 defeat at Trinity Valley on Wednesday. That loss highlighted offensive struggles that have plagued the team throughout the season.

A bright spot for the Cougars has been guard Nathaniel Smith. Despite the team’s difficulties, Smith has provided scoring punch, including a 13-point, seven-assist effort in the team’s lone win over Tyler on Jan. 3. He followed that with 10 points in the loss to Trinity Valley. His ability to create offense will be critical against a stout Kilgore defense.

The statistical disparity is pronounced. Kilgore averages approximately 77 points per game across its recent wins, while Coastal Bend has been held under 75 points in seven of its eight losses, including outputs of 38, 60 and 58 points.

This game marks the first of two regular-season meetings between the teams, with the rematch scheduled for Jan. 31 in Beeville. For Kilgore, it represents an opportunity to solidify its standing. For Coastal Bend, it is a chance to find a rhythm against a quality opponent and reverse a challenging start to the season.

Tip-off is set for Saturday afternoon at Masters Gymnasium.
