Dodge City vs Butler (Kan.)
EL DORADO, Kan. (Interstat) — A key men’s junior college basketball matchup in the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference is set for Saturday when the Dodge City Conquistadors visit the Butler (Kan.) Grizzly Bears.
The game tips off at 7 p.m. CST at the Power Plant.
Dodge City (13-4) enters on a three-game winning streak, most recently defeating Garden City 92-83 on Wednesday. The Conquistadors are led by guard Rickey Loftin II, who is averaging 19.0 points, 7.3 rebounds and 4.0 assists over his last three contests. He scored 20 points with nine rebounds in the win over Garden City, where he was supported by Derrick Rivers’ 27 points and Wesly Rosa’s 18-rebound, 4-block performance.
Butler (10-5) is coming off a dominant 96-75 victory over Cowley on Wednesday. The Grizzly Bears feature one of the league’s most dynamic scorers in Tristan Hankins, who poured in 37 points in a narrow 118-113 loss to Barton on Jan. 3. In his last three games, Hankins is averaging 26.0 points, 7.7 rebounds and 4.3 assists, including a 19-point, 13-rebound double-double against Cowley.
The teams have followed similar paths this season, each with a loss to Barton and a win over Cowley. Butler’s offense has been explosive at times, scoring 132 points in games against Garden City and Fort Hays Tech, but the Grizzlies have also allowed 118 points or more in three of their five losses. Dodge City has shown a knack for close victories, with four wins by three points or fewer, including an overtime win at Cloud County.
Saturday’s contest will be a test of Dodge City’s steady defense against Butler’s high-powered attack. The outcome could provide early positioning in the conference standings as both teams navigate a rigorous January schedule.
