Independence vs Cowley
ARKANSAS CITY, Kan. (Interstat) — Marcus Smith scored 27 points and the Cowley Tigers used a high-efficiency offensive performance to pull away from the Independence Pirates for an 86-74 victory in a men’s junior college basketball game Saturday.
The game, played at Cowley County Community College, saw the Tigers improve to 9-5 on the season while the Pirates fell to 7-5. Interstat’s ELO system had projected Cowley with a 62.5 percent probability to win.
The most important part of the contest was Cowley’s consistent offensive execution, which overcame a fast start by Independence. The Pirates opened the game with a Trae Lewis 3-pointer and led early, but Cowley’s Smith quickly established a rhythm. His personal 7-0 run late in the first quarter, capped by a steal and assist to Kyden Thompson for a layup at the buzzer, gave the Tigers a 39-33 lead after a period marked by numerous turnovers and missed shots from both sides.
That momentum carried into the second quarter. Cowley opened with a Leslie Owens Jr. jumper and then unleashed a decisive 13-2 run midway through the period to build a double-digit lead it would not relinquish. The surge was fueled by Smith’s scoring and playmaking, along with interior baskets from Roman Miller. Independence struggled to counter, hampered by 16 turnovers that Cowley converted into 12 steals and numerous transition opportunities.
Smith, the top star for Cowley, finished with 27 points in 30 minutes, consistently attacking the basket and drawing fouls. He went 9 for 10 from the free throw line. He was supported by Miller, who added 16 points and four rebounds, and Owens Jr., who contributed 15 points. LJ Britt chipped in 11 points, four rebounds and three assists for the Tigers.
For Independence, David Wilson led the way with 13 points, while Sterling Knox and Fortune Anslem-Ibe each added 11. Lonnie Bass Jr. grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.
Statistically, Cowley’s advantage was rooted in superior shooting and ball security. The Tigers shot 52.5 percent from the field (31 of 59) compared to Independence’s 47.5 percent (29 of 61). More critically, Cowley committed only 12 turnovers while forcing 16 from the Pirates. The Tigers also dished out 12 assists to Independence’s six and recorded 12 steals. Both teams attempted 24 free throws, with Cowley making 18 and Independence making 12.
The teams had an identical number of possessions, 72, but Cowley’s offensive rating of 118.8 points per 100 possessions far outpaced Independence’s 102.6, underscoring the Tigers’ more effective use of each opportunity.
Independence next plays at home against Dodge City on Wednesday. Cowley will host Seward County, also on Wednesday.
