Coastal Bend vs Trinity Valley

ATHENS, Texas (Interstat) — A surging Trinity Valley men’s basketball team, ranked among the nation’s elite junior college programs, will look to extend its dominance when it hosts struggling Coastal Bend on Wednesday for a Teacher Appreciation Day contest.

The Cardinals (12-1) have won five straight games, including a 98-52 road rout of Bossier Parish on Saturday where they showcased a high-powered offense. In that victory, sophomore guard Braylon Wenger exploded for 26 points in just 26 minutes, continuing a streak of strong performances. Wenger is averaging over 18 points per game in his last three outings.

They face a Coastal Bend Cougars squad (1-7) that is coming off its first win of the season, a narrow 75-72 home victory over Tyler this past Saturday. The Cougars will lean heavily on guard Taj Petteway, who led that breakthrough win with 24 points and eight rebounds. His scoring punch is essential for a team that has struggled to keep pace offensively for much of the season.

Beyond the stark contrast in records, the teams are on opposite trajectories. Trinity Valley’s lone loss came in its second game of the season at Midland on Nov. 14. Since then, the Cardinals have reeled off 11 consecutive wins, often in convincing fashion. Their defense has been particularly stifling, holding opponents to an average of 52 points in their last two games.

Coastal Bend, meanwhile, has faced consistent challenges, with its Saturday win providing a potential spark. Alongside Petteway, forwards Samuel Nwugha Galan and Nathaniel Smith provided crucial contributions in the victory and will need to replicate that effort against a deep Trinity Valley frontcourt.

The game will be played during Trinity Valley’s Teacher Appreciation Day festivities. Following this matchup, Trinity Valley will prepare for a key Saturday showdown against Blinn, while Coastal Bend travels to face Kilgore.

Tip-off is set for Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2026, at Cardinal Gym.
