Barstow vs Desert

BARSTOW, Calif. (Interstat) — Two men’s junior college basketball teams seeking momentum will meet Saturday when the Barstow Vikings visit the Desert Roadrunners in a non-conference California matchup.

Both programs enter the contest on losing streaks. Barstow (4-9) fell 88-83 to Palo Verde on Wednesday, snapping a brief two-game win streak that included a 96-92 overtime victory at El Camino on Dec. 11. Desert (3-8) has dropped three straight, most recently an 85-77 home loss to Riverside on Tuesday.

The Vikings will lean on standout guard Trestyne Nguru, who has been on a prolific scoring run. Over his last five games, Nguru is averaging 23.6 points, 7.8 rebounds and 4.4 assists per contest. He posted a 30-point, 7-rebound effort in a win at Long Beach on Dec. 5 and followed with 28 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists in the overtime win at El Camino.

Desert counters with its own offensive threat in Lee’Tron Turner. The guard is coming off a season-high 26-point performance against Riverside, adding 6 rebounds. His production has been variable, but he scored 17 points in a win over Los Angeles Valley on Nov. 22.

Barstow’s season has been marked by offensive inconsistency, with points ranging from a low of 31 in a November loss to San Diego City to the 96-point outburst against El Camino. Desert has shown similar volatility, scoring 102 in a win over Grossmont but being held to 57 in a loss to El Camino.

This game serves as a precursor to a conference rematch scheduled for Jan. 31 in Barstow. Both teams will look to establish an early edge before beginning their conference slates in January.

Saturday’s tipoff is set for 3 p.m. PST at Desert College Gymnasium.
