BUTLER, BARTON SET FOR KEY JUNIOR COLLEGE SHOWDOWN
GREAT BEND, Kan. (Interstat) — A pivotal early-season men’s junior college basketball matchup is set for Saturday when the Butler (Kan.) Grizzly Bears visit the Barton Cougars at the Barton Gym.
Both teams enter the contest with identical 9-4 records in all competitions, looking to establish momentum as conference play intensifies. The game tips off at 7 p.m. on Jan. 3.
Butler arrives after a three-week break following a high-scoring 130-110 road loss to Seward County on Dec. 13. Despite the defeat, the Grizzly Bears’ offense showcased its potency. Tristan Hankins scored 22 points with six assists, Josiah Kirkwood added 19 points and Xavier Brown contributed 20 points and five assists in that game.
Prior to that loss, Butler had won three straight, averaging 125 points per game in those victories. Their season scoring average is among the nation’s highest for junior college teams.
The Barton Cougars also last played on Dec. 13, falling 111-95 to Garden City. Standout performances in that loss came from Jon Byrd, who had 17 points and eight assists, and Sebastian Muchitsch, who scored 19 points. Noah Williams added 12 points and eight rebounds.
Barton has shown a pattern of tight games, with four of its five losses coming by six points or fewer. Their defense will be tested by Butler’s up-tempo attack.
Historically, matchups between these Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference rivals are fiercely contested. The outcome could have early implications for the conference standings.
