Hutchinson vs Colby
COLBY, Kan. (Interstat) — The Colby Trojans, entering with just one win on the season, delivered a stunning performance to defeat the Hutchinson Blue Dragons 89-79 in a men’s junior college basketball game Saturday at the Community Building.
The result defied statistical projections, as Hutchinson had been given a nearly 64 percent probability to win by one analytics system. Instead, Colby improved to 2-9 overall, while Hutchinson fell to 7-6.
The most critical phase of the game was a decisive second-quarter run by the Trojans that turned a narrow deficit into a commanding lead they would not relinquish. After a tightly contested first quarter that ended with Colby leading 44-35, the Trojans opened the second period with a 10-2 surge to extend their advantage to 54-37. The run was fueled by balanced scoring and stifling defense that forced multiple Hutchinson turnovers and contested shots.
Hutchinson, led by Kyrell Shaw’s game-high 32 points, could never fully recover. The Blue Dragons chipped away at the lead but were unable to string together enough stops to seriously threaten Colby’s control in the final minutes. Daleron Thomas added 20 points for Hutchinson.
Colby’s victory was a product of efficient offense and standout individual efforts. Aliou Diallo, cited as the Trojans’ top star, filled the stat sheet with 17 points, six rebounds and five assists, often controlling the tempo of the game. Giannis Asimakopoulos provided a major spark off the bench with 21 points and seven rebounds, including several key three-pointers. Nana Keutcha anchored the interior with 13 points and nine rebounds, while D.J. Cason contributed 12 points.
The Trojans executed effectively down the stretch, making crucial free throws to seal the victory. Diallo was particularly reliable from the line, sinking four free throws in the final 11 seconds to extinguish any last hope for a Hutchinson comeback.
The Blue Dragons’ previous game was a 75-62 home victory over Cloud County on Dec. 13. Colby’s last outing was a 93-68 road loss to Coffeyville, also on Dec. 13.
Hutchinson will look to rebound when it hosts Coffeyville on Wednesday. Colby aims to build on this momentum when it welcomes Pratt on the same night.
