Orange Coast vs Sequoias
VISALIA, Calif. (Interstat) — A stark contrast in fortunes will be on display Friday when the winless Orange Coast College Pirates face the surging College of the Sequoias Giants in a California community college men’s basketball matchup at the COS Classic.
The Pirates (0-10) enter still searching for their first victory of the season, most recently falling 58-56 to MiraCosta on Dec. 12. Orange Coast has lost its games by an average margin of 19.2 points. Forward Chris Obiajulu has been a consistent bright spot, averaging 14.4 points and 7.2 rebounds over his last five contests. He scored 17 points in the narrow loss to MiraCosta.
Conversely, the Giants (7-3) are riding high after a dominant 102-74 road win over Siskiyous on Saturday. That victory was fueled by a historic performance from guard Javon Bragg, who erupted for 45 points and 13 rebounds. Teammate Cameron Kelly recorded a triple-double in the same game with 21 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists. Bragg’s scoring outburst highlights a potent Giants offense that has topped 95 points twice this season.
The matchup pits one of the state’s most struggling teams against one finding its rhythm. Orange Coast’s defense, allowing 89.3 points per game, will be severely tested by a Sequoias squad averaging 80.8 points. The Pirates will need to control the tempo and find secondary scoring behind Obiajulu to compete.
For Sequoias, avoiding a letdown against a winless opponent will be key as they look to build momentum before starting Central Valley Conference play next month. The Giants’ depth was on full display against Siskiyous, with three players scoring 21 points or more.
Tipoff is scheduled for Friday, Dec. 19, at Porter Field House. Both teams return to action in the classic on Saturday, with Sequoias hosting Butte and Orange Coast traveling to face Lemoore.
