Cypress vs Los Angeles Valley

Preview: Cypress Chargers at Los Angeles Valley Monarchs

VALLEY GLEN, Calif. (Interstat) — A pair of California community college men’s basketball teams on differing trajectories will meet Wednesday when the Cypress Chargers visit the Los Angeles Valley Monarchs.

The Chargers (6-3) enter with momentum, having won four of their last five games, including a 77-63 home victory over Cuyamaca last Friday. The Monarchs (5-5) have been inconsistent, alternating wins and losses over their past six contests and coming off an 81-60 road defeat to Cerritos on Saturday.

Cypress will lean on forward Michael Wright, who has been a dominant force. Over his last seven games, Wright is averaging a double-double, including a 25-point, 9-rebound performance against Cuyamaca and a 15-point, 20-rebound outing in a November overtime win against Long Beach. His versatility and rebounding prowess will be a primary focus for the Monarchs’ defense.

Los Angeles Valley counters with guard Andy Porcayo, a key facilitator. While his scoring has fluctuated, Porcayo contributes across the stat sheet, dishing a season-high five assists in a win over Rio Hondo on Dec. 6. The Monarchs will need a more efficient offensive night from him and supporting players like Derek Peterson, who led the team with 14 points in the loss to Cerritos.

The matchup presents a contrast in recent form. Cypress’s three losses have all been close, including a one-point defeat to San Diego City. Los Angeles Valley has struggled against stronger competition, with its five losses coming by an average of 16.4 points.

This non-conference game is the final tune-up for both teams before holiday tournaments. Cypress will host Santa Monica on Friday, while Los Angeles Valley travels to Irvine Valley on Dec. 30.

Tip-off is set for Wednesday, Dec. 17, at Los Angeles Valley College.
