Monterey Peninsula vs San Mateo

SAN MATEO, Calif. (Interstat) — A stark contrast in trajectories will be on display Tuesday night when the surging San Mateo Bulldogs host the struggling Monterey Peninsula Lobos in a California community college men’s basketball non-conference matchup.

The Bulldogs (7-1) enter riding a five-game winning streak and have been dominant defensively, allowing an average of just 60.5 points during that stretch. Their most recent result was a 68-46 rout of Porterville on Dec. 2. San Mateo’s only blemish came in a 100-76 road loss to Santa Rosa on Nov. 7, but they have since responded with convincing victories, including a 94-57 win at Coalinga.

Conversely, the Lobos (5-9) have lost three of their last four and are coming off a 73-64 home loss to Lemoore on Saturday. Monterey Peninsula has shown flashes, including a narrow 59-57 win over Merritt on Dec. 12 and an 86-84 overtime victory at De Anza last month, but consistency has been elusive. The team has struggled to find offensive rhythm, scoring 64 points or fewer in six of their nine losses.

Tuesday’s game at San Mateo’s home court presents a formidable challenge for the Lobos. The Bulldogs have excelled on both ends of the floor, boasting a potent offense that has scored 78 or more points in five games, complemented by their recent stifling defense. Monterey Peninsula will need to limit turnovers and find a way to crack San Mateo’s defensive pressure to have a chance.

For San Mateo, the contest serves as a final tune-up before hosting a quick three-game holiday tournament later in the week, featuring games against Sierra, Contra Costa and West Valley. Monterey Peninsula will not play again until after the new year, hosting De Anza on Jan. 2, 2026.

Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. PST on Tuesday, Dec. 16, at San Mateo’s main gymnasium.
