Contra Costa vs Columbia (Calif.)
COLUMBIA, Calif. (Interstat) — A surging Columbia (Calif.) squad looks to rebound from its first loss in over a month when it hosts a streaky Contra Costa team in a non-conference California junior college men’s basketball matchup Saturday.
The Claim Jumpers (8-2) had won seven straight before a 75-67 road loss to Yuba last Saturday. They return home to Oak Pavilion, where they are 5-0 this season. A key to their success has been forward Ahsan Huff, who is coming off a dominant 16-point, 16-rebound performance in a win over Folsom Lake on Nov. 30. In his last two games, Huff has averaged 15 points and 13.5 rebounds.
They face a Contra Costa Comets (5-3) team seeking consistency. The Comets have alternated wins and losses in their last five games, most recently falling 84-70 to Modesto on Nov. 25. Their season has featured both a three-game winning streak and a 34-point road loss to Las Positas. They are 2-2 on the road.
This game serves as a final tune-up before both teams enter extended holiday breaks. Columbia will not play again until Jan. 2, while Contra Costa’s next game is Dec. 18.
Historically, the Claim Jumpers have relied on a balanced attack and strong home-court advantage, averaging over 80 points per game. The Comets have shown resilience in close games, with two of their wins coming by three points or fewer.
Saturday’s contest tips off at 5 p.m. PST. For Columbia, it’s a chance to regain momentum. For Contra Costa, it’s an opportunity to secure a statement road victory against one of the region’s top records before the break.
