Coalinga vs Santa Barbara

Preview: Coalinga Falcons at Santa Barbara Vaqueros, Men’s Junior College Basketball

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (Interstat) — A struggling Coalinga team seeks an upset against a surging Santa Barbara squad when the Falcons visit the Vaqueros in a California community college men’s basketball tournament game Thursday.

The matchup, part of the ECC/SBCC Tournament, pits teams on opposite trajectories. The visiting Falcons (2-9) enter on a five-game losing streak, most recently a 91-59 road loss to Allan Hancock on Saturday. The home Vaqueros (6-3) look to rebound from a 74-59 home loss to Sierra, also on Saturday, which snapped a three-game winning streak.

Coalinga’s offense will lean on guard Daniel Rodriguez, who is coming off a team-high 16-point performance in 32 minutes against Allan Hancock. Rodriguez has shown scoring bursts, including a 12-point outing in just one minute of play in a loss at Cuesta on Dec. 3.

Beyond Rodriguez, Isaiah Robinson led the Falcons with 18 points in the last contest, and Whylkeems Estimond added six rebounds and three blocks. However, consistent scoring has been an issue for Coalinga, which has allowed 85 or more points in four of its losses this season.

Santa Barbara has found more success with a balanced attack and closer results. Four of its six wins have been decided by five points or fewer, including a 64-63 victory over Victor Valley and an 81-79 win against Bakersfield. Their defense will aim to pressure a Falcons squad averaging just 64.5 points per game during its current skid.

The Vaqueros hold a distinct advantage in record and momentum, playing on their home floor. Coalinga, still searching for its first road win of the season (0-7), faces a steep challenge to turn its season around in tournament play.

Tip-off is set for Thursday at Santa Barbara City College.
