Ventura vs Bakersfield

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (Interstat) — A pivotal early-season California community college men’s basketball matchup is set for Thursday when the Ventura Pirates visit the Bakersfield Renegades.

The Pirates (8-3) enter having dropped two straight close games, including a 78-72 road loss at Riverside last Saturday. They will look to halt that skid behind standout guard Snookey Wigington, who poured in 31 points in that defeat. Over his last seven games, Wigington is averaging 16.3 points and 6.0 assists per contest, showcasing a blend of scoring and playmaking. He is supported by a strong frontcourt presence in Jerimiyah Smith, who recorded a 15-point, 14-rebound double-double against Riverside.

The Renegades (6-4) are also looking to rebound after a 82-74 home loss to Allan Hancock last Thursday. Bakersfield’s offense runs through guard Damari Davis, who exploded for 26 points in that contest. Davis has been a volatile scorer, however, tallying 26 and 15 points in his last two outings after a quiet three-game stretch. Forward Zykiar Henderson provides a consistent interior threat, coming off a 19-point, 10-rebound performance.

Both teams have shown offensive firepower but seek more consistent defensive efforts. Ventura’s two recent losses saw them allow an average of 75.5 points, while Bakersfield has surrendered 80 or more points in three of its four losses this season.

The game will be the final non-conference tune-up for both squads before their respective league schedules begin in January. Ventura holds the superior overall record, but Bakersfield’s home-court advantage at the Gil Bishop Sports Center could be a key factor in what projects as a tightly contested game.

Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. PST.
