Cochise vs Monroe
YUMA, Ariz. (Interstat) — The Monroe Mustangs and Cochise Apaches, two men’s junior college basketball teams riding contrasting recent momentum, will meet Thursday in a non-conference clash.
Monroe (8-4) enters on a two-game win streak, most recently an 85-70 road victory at Central Arizona on Wednesday. Nick Williams led the way with 17 points and seven rebounds, continuing a strong stretch for the sophomore. He has averaged 14.6 points and 7.2 rebounds over his last five contests, providing consistent scoring for the Mustangs.
The Apaches (6-3), meanwhile, look to rebound from consecutive last-possession defeats. Cochise fell 84-83 at Dawson on Wednesday, a game in which Naeem Colston posted a double-double with 10 points and 16 rebounds. The loss followed a 70-69 home defeat to Northwest on Tuesday. Colston has been a force on the glass, averaging 10 rebounds over his last five games, including a 12-point, 12-rebound performance in a win over Casper last month.
Thursday’s matchup features a Monroe offense that has topped 80 points in four of its last six games against a Cochise squad that has shown both explosive potential and late-game vulnerability. Beyond Williams, Monroe’s Faquir Mosley dished out six assists in the win over Central Arizona. Cochise will counter with a balanced attack; in the narrow loss to Dawson, Teron Murray scored 17 points and Jhace Johnson added 20 points and four assists alongside Colston’s interior presence.
The game is a standalone contest for both teams before diverging schedules. Monroe remains in Arizona to face Arizona Western on Friday, while Cochise does not play again until a three-game set against Southern Nevada beginning Jan. 8.
Tipoff is set for Thursday evening.
