Irvine Valley vs Sierra
ROCKLIN, Calif. (Interstat) — Two of California’s top early-season men’s junior college basketball teams will clash Thursday when the Irvine Valley Lasers (5-2) face the Sierra Wolverines (5-1) in the Monterey Bay Classic.
Irvine Valley enters on a three-game win streak, most recently defeating Desert 78-63 on Nov. 25. Matt Mowers led the Lasers in that victory with 25 points and six rebounds, supported by 17 points from Ahmad Alhammouri.
The Sierra Wolverines boast a potent offense, averaging 87 points per game. They are coming off a 101-86 home win over De Anza on Nov. 26, powered by Dontrell Johnson’s 27 points and 10 rebounds. Cedric Sydnor added 12 points and eight rebounds, while Jayce Underwood dished 10 assists.
The matchup features a contrast in momentum. Irvine Valley has found its form after a 1-2 start, while Sierra’s only setback was a 103-90 loss to Butte on Nov. 19.
Thursday’s winner will claim an early non-conference quality victory ahead of league play next month. Following the tournament, Irvine Valley hosts San Diego Miramar on Dec. 13. Sierra’s next game is at home against Shasta on Dec. 20.
