Garden City vs Barton

Preview: Garden City at Barton Set for Key Junior College Clash

GREAT BEND, Kan. (Interstat) — A pivotal early-season men’s junior college basketball matchup is set for Saturday when the Garden City Broncbusters visit the Barton Cougars.

The Cougars (9-4) enter with a slightly better overall record than the Broncbusters (7-4), but both teams are looking to rebound from narrow midweek losses. Barton fell 74-71 at Fort Hays Tech on Tuesday, while Garden City suffered a 92-90 home defeat to Seward County on Wednesday.

Garden City will lean on guard Jordon Nevill, who is coming off a strong all-around performance despite the loss. Against Seward County, Nevill logged 19 points, seven assists and one block in 31 minutes. Over his last three games, he is averaging 15.3 points and 4.0 assists.

Barton counters with forward Noah Williams, a consistent force in the paint. Williams scored 22 points and grabbed three rebounds in the loss to Fort Hays Tech. He has recorded a double-double this season and is a major defensive presence, averaging nearly two blocks per game over a recent five-game stretch.

The Broncbusters’ offense has been potent but inconsistent. They average over 97 points per game but have lost three straight, including a 132-107 defeat to Butler on Dec. 3. In their recent losses, defensive lapses have been costly.

Barton has played several tight games, with three of its four losses coming by a combined eight points. The Cougars have relied on a more methodical pace and stout defense, holding opponents to an average of 70.2 points during their current 3-3 stretch.

For Garden City, support for Nevill in the backcourt will be crucial. Devonte Reed (12 points, four blocks vs. Seward County) and Dasean Lewis (13 points, four assists) are key contributors. Barton will look for secondary scoring behind Williams from Sebastian Muchitsch and Aris Rodriguez, who combined for 23 points and 12 rebounds last outing.

This contest marks the final game for both teams before the holiday break and could provide important momentum heading into January conference play.

Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. CST on Saturday, Dec. 13, at the Barton Gymnasium.
