Central Wyoming vs Dawson
Preview: Central Wyoming Rustlers vs. Dawson Buccaneers
POWELL, Wyo. (Interstat) — The Dawson Buccaneers look to continue their winning season against the struggling Central Wyoming Rustlers in a men’s junior college basketball matchup Saturday at the NWC Classic.
Dawson (6-4) enters the contest having won four of its last six games, though coming off a narrow 82-80 road loss to Gillette on Dec. 6. The Buccaneers are led by guard Kai Guess, who erupted for 28 points, three rebounds and three assists in that defeat. His scoring ability will be central to Dawson’s offensive plans.
Central Wyoming (2-7) snapped a five-game losing streak with a 79-65 home victory over Miles on Friday. Forward Luke Danielson led the way with 20 points in 33 minutes, building on a season that has seen flashes of strong play, including a 12-point, five-rebound performance in a win at Colorado Northwestern last month.
The Rustlers’ season, however, has been defined by offensive struggles. They have been held under 70 points in six of their nine games, including a 46-point outing in a loss to Utah State Eastern on Dec. 5. Consistency beyond Danielson and Friday’s secondary contributors Tyler Jette (18 points) and Camrin Gulley (five rebounds, four assists) remains a question.
Conversely, Dawson has shown potent scoring, averaging over 88 points per game in its victories. Beyond Guess, contributors like Zakai Owens and Kuich Gatwech provide balance.
This neutral-site game at the NWC Classic is a non-conference fixture for both teams. Dawson faces a quick turnaround for a two-game road trip to Arizona beginning Monday. Central Wyoming does not play again until conference action resumes in mid-January.
Saturday’s game will hinge on whether Central Wyoming can sustain the momentum from its Friday win and contain Dawson’s higher-powered attack, or if the Buccaneers’ superior record and offensive firepower will prove too much for the Rustlers.
