Rio Hondo vs Chaffey

RANCHO CUCAMONGA, Calif. (Interstat) — The Chaffey Panthers used a dominant first-half offensive display to cruise past the Rio Hondo Roadrunners 84-62 in a men’s junior college basketball game Tuesday night.

Chaffey set the tone early, erupting for 45 points in the opening quarter and never looked back, leading wire-to-wire to secure the victory. The Panthers entered the halftime break with a commanding 84-62 advantage after adding 39 more points in the second quarter. Rio Hondo managed 29 points in the first and 33 in the second, but could not keep pace with Chaffey’s efficient scoring.

The game was ultimately decided by shooting efficiency. Chaffey connected on 32 of 66 field goal attempts, a 48.5 percent clip, and were potent from beyond the arc, making 9 of 25 three-point attempts. Rio Hondo struggled offensively, shooting just 24 for 70 from the floor, a 34.3 percent rate. Their shooting woes were particularly acute from long distance, where they made only 3 of 26 attempts.

Deisyn Payne led all scorers for Chaffey, pouring in 24 points in just 17 minutes of action. Payne was instrumental from three-point range, connecting on multiple key shots. He was supported by a balanced Panthers attack that saw Avery Garcia dish out 7 assists to go with his 13 points, while Jonathan Markham controlled the glass with a game-high 12 rebounds. Brian Smith and Collin Ingram also reached double figures, scoring 12 and 11 points respectively.

Rio Hondo was led by Ryan Osborne, who posted 15 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists. Bode Karunwi added 10 points off the bench for the Roadrunners, who were hampered by 15 turnovers, matching Chaffey’s total, but were unable to capitalize on the other end with the same effectiveness.

The Panthers won the rebounding battle 44-39 and were more effective in converting possessions into points. Chaffey posted an offensive rating of 108.9, scoring 84 points on 77 possessions, while Rio Hondo managed an offensive rating of 79.9 with 62 points on 78 possessions.

With the loss, Rio Hondo remains winless, falling to 0-6 on the season. Chaffey improves to 4-3 and will look to build on the victory when they travel to face Riverside on Wednesday. Rio Hondo’s next opportunity for its first win comes Friday at home against Merced. The game was organized by the California Community College Athletic Association.
