Santa Fe vs Pensacola State
Preview: Santa Fe Saints at Pensacola State Pirates
PENSACOLA, Fla. (Interstat) — A stark contrast in early-season trajectories will be on display Sunday when the winless Santa Fe Saints face the surging Pensacola State Pirates in a men’s junior college basketball matchup at the Florida Juco Shootout.
The Saints (0-1) enter having played just one game this season, a narrow 81-80 road loss to Tallahassee State on Nov. 12. In that contest, guard Tre Dubois erupted for 38 points, while Jahari Simmons dished out 10 assists. Santa Fe’s extended layoff and lack of game rhythm present a significant challenge.
They face a Pensacola State squad (8-2) riding high after a tough 59-55 victory over Florida Southwestern State on Saturday. The Pirates have won three straight and six of their last seven, showcasing a deep and resilient roster.
The primary focus for Santa Fe’s defense will be Pirates standout Deven Bates. The guard is in exceptional form, averaging 24.7 points, 8.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists over his last four contests. He scored 25 points with 8 rebounds and 5 assists in Saturday’s win. Forward Malick Sene provides a strong interior presence, coming off a 15-point, 12-rebound double-double.
For Santa Fe, generating offense beyond Dubois will be critical. Simmons’ playmaking and Alex Pierre-Louis’ scoring punch must complement Dubois’ output for the Saints to keep pace. The Saints’ defense, which allowed 81 points in its lone outing, will be tested by a Pirates offense that has topped 100 points once and averages considerable production.
Pensacola State’s experience in close games, including an overtime win and several tight victories during its current streak, could prove advantageous. Santa Fe, seeking its first win, must overcome both a formidable opponent and potential early-game rust from the lengthy hiatus.
The game tips off Sunday, Dec. 7, as part of the shootout event. Following this contest, Santa Fe begins a two-game road swing in Georgia, while Pensacola State travels to face Miami Dade and Indian River State next weekend.
