Odessa vs Southern Idaho

TWIN FALLS, Idaho (Interstat) — In a clash of nationally prominent junior college men’s basketball programs, the Odessa College Wranglers used a dominant first-half performance to hand the College of Southern Idaho Eagles their first loss of the season, 73-66, on Saturday.

The visiting Wranglers, improving to 11-2, built a commanding 45-32 lead by halftime and withstood a late Eagles rally to secure the victory. Southern Idaho fell to 7-1.

The most critical phase of the game occurred in the opening quarter, where Odessa established control. After a slow start for both teams, the Wranglers unleashed a decisive 16-2 run midway through the period. The surge was fueled by aggressive defense that forced five Southern Idaho turnovers during the stretch, converting them into easy transition opportunities. Qwes Williams, who finished as the game’s top performer with 18 points and 11 rebounds, was central to the run, scoring on consecutive layups to extend the lead. The Eagles, who entered the game with a 59.8% probability to win according to Interstat’s ELO system, were forced to call two timeouts in the first quarter in an attempt to stem the tide, but could not close the gap before halftime.

Odessa’s defensive pressure was a defining factor, as they recorded 10 steals and forced 12 Southern Idaho turnovers, which led to 18 points. The Wranglers also dominated the glass with 45 total rebounds, including 15 on the offensive end that resulted in 16 second-chance points. Southern Idaho, despite a significant height advantage that produced 11 blocked shots, struggled offensively. The Eagles shot just 35.2% from the floor and managed only four assists against 12 turnovers.

Williams led a balanced Odessa attack, supported by JD Bradford with 11 points and five assists, and Ziyade Ndancky, who added 11 points and six rebounds in just 19 minutes. For Southern Idaho, Ace Reiser logged 40 minutes and led his team with 18 points and five assists. Ben Thornbrue added 16 points and four blocks, while Cooper Kesler scored 11 points.

The Eagles mounted a challenge in the final minutes of the second half, cutting a 20-point deficit to as few as five points behind Thornbrue’s inside scoring and Kesler’s perimeter shooting. A Kesler 3-pointer with 2:35 remaining brought Southern Idaho within 61-56, prompting an Odessa timeout. The Wranglers responded by getting the ball to Williams, who answered with a crucial 3-pointer on the ensuing possession to push the lead back to eight and effectively seal the game.

Odessa next plays at home against South Plains on Jan. 5. Southern Idaho travels to face Yavapai on Dec. 12.
