San Diego Mesa vs Chaffey

RANCHO CUCAMONGA, Calif. (Interstat) — In a high-scoring, back-and-forth affair, the Chaffey Panthers outlasted the San Diego Mesa Olympians 77-69 in a men’s junior college basketball game on Friday.

The game, played at a frantic pace, saw both teams trade blows throughout, but a more efficient offensive performance and a significant advantage at the free-throw line ultimately propelled the Panthers to the victory. Chaffey improved its season record to 3-3, while San Diego Mesa dropped its fourth straight game to fall to 1-5.

The contest was a tale of offensive execution. Chaffey scored its 77 points on 76 possessions, translating to an offensive rating of 101.5. San Diego Mesa, while competitive, was less efficient, posting an offensive rating of 94.8 by scoring 69 points from 73 trips down the floor.

The first quarter set the tone for a shootout, with Chaffey taking a narrow 37-35 lead into the second period. The Panthers then extended their advantage in the second quarter, outscoring the Olympians 40-24 to seal the win.

Michael Contreras was the standout performer for the Olympians, leading all scorers with 22 points while adding 8 rebounds in 37 minutes of action. Micah Gibbs provided a spark off the bench for San Diego Mesa, contributing 15 points, including three shots from beyond the arc.

Chaffey’s victory was a balanced effort. Logan Jereczek led the Panthers with 19 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists. Brian Smith orchestrated the offense effectively, finishing with 15 points, 8 rebounds, and a team-high 6 assists. The interior presence of Kajuan Thomas was also crucial, as he tallied 9 points, 8 rebounds, and 2 blocked shots.

From the field, the shooting percentages were comparable. Chaffey made 26 of its 66 attempts, while San Diego Mesa connected on 28 of 71 shots. The difference came from the perimeter and the charity stripe. The Panthers were potent from three-point range, hitting 11 of 25 attempts. The Olympians made 8 of 23 from deep.

The most decisive statistical disparity was in free throws. Chaffey attempted 25 free throws, making 14. San Diego Mesa, by contrast, went to the line only 8 times, converting 5. The Panthers also won the rebounding battle, collecting 46 total boards to the Olympians’ 42.

Both teams were nearly even in other hustle categories. San Diego Mesa recorded 8 assists, 8 steals, and 4 blocks, while Chaffey posted 7 assists, 7 steals, and 4 blocks. Turnovers were also close, with the Olympians committing 12 and the Panthers giving the ball away 11 times. San Diego Mesa was whistled for 16 personal fouls, double the 8 called on Chaffey.

The result defied the pregame projections from Interstat, whose game simulator had predicted a 100-100 tie. However, the same service’s ELO rating system had heavily favored Chaffey, giving the Panthers a 91.6 percent probability of victory.

Looking ahead, Chaffey will aim to build on this win when it hosts Rio Hondo on Tuesday. San Diego Mesa seeks to end its losing streak on the road at Saddleback next Monday.
