REDDING, Calif. (Interstat) — An undefeated Merritt men’s basketball team will look to continue its strong start to the season when it faces a struggling Shasta squad on Thursday, Nov. 20, 2025, in the opening round of the Shasta Invitational.

The Merritt Thunderbirds (3-0) enter the contest with a perfect record, coming off a 72-67 home victory over Ohlone on Nov. 14. Their season has been marked by narrow victories, including a 75-74 win over Skyline and an 85-91 overtime triumph against Canada College.

Conversely, the Shasta Knights (0-6) are searching for their first win. They are looking to rebound from a 60-91 road loss to Sierra on Nov. 13. Shasta’s season has been defined by defensive struggles, allowing an average of over 80 points per game in their six consecutive losses.

The Knights will need a standout performance from Anthony Sanchez, who scored 14 points in their last outing. Cheik Diop and Scott Steffan have also been productive contributors.

The game tips off a three-day tournament hosted by Shasta College. The Thunderbirds will face Santa Rosa the following day, while the Knights are scheduled to play Cabrillo.

Thursday’s matchup presents a stark contrast in early-season momentum, with Merritt aiming to preserve its flawless record and Shasta desperate to break into the win column.
