Hutchinson vs Barton

HUTCHINSON, Kan. (Interstat) — Lolo Rudolph hit a 3-pointer with nine seconds remaining to lift the Hutchinson Community College Blue Dragons to a dramatic 58-57 road victory over the Barton Community College Cougars in a men’s junior college basketball game Wednesday night.

The game-winning shot capped a chaotic final minute and handed Hutchinson its first lead since the opening quarter, delivering a critical conference win. Barton, which led for over 38 minutes of game time, failed to get a shot off on its final possession, committing a turnover as time expired.

Hutchinson improved to 5-4 overall, while Barton fell to 8-3.

The Cougars controlled the first half, building a 26-20 lead after one quarter behind 10 points from Noah Williams. Barton extended its advantage to 13 points early in the second quarter after a technical foul led to a free throw, making the score 32-19.

The Blue Dragons chipped away, using a 12-5 run to close the gap. A driving layup by Kordell Williams with 5:29 to play cut the Barton lead to 49-51, forcing a Hutchinson timeout. The teams traded scores until, with 1:18 left, Barton’s Aris Rodriguez made a free throw to put the Cougars up 57-54.

Both sides went scoreless on their next possessions. Following a Barton timeout with 26 seconds left, the Cougars turned the ball over. That set the stage for Rudolph, who took a pass and sank the decisive three from the wing to put Hutchinson ahead for good.

Kyrell Shaw led all Hutchinson scorers with 18 points, while Bobby Cannon added 10 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Chudier Dorar anchored the defense with four blocked shots.

For Barton, Noah Williams recorded a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Jayden Ramirez and Aris Rodriguez each added 10 points, with Rodriguez scoring seven of his points from the free-throw line in the second half. Sebastian Muchitsch contributed nine points and eight rebounds.

Statistical disparities highlighted the nature of the tight contest. Barton dominated the glass, outrebounding Hutchinson 40-28, including a 12-4 edge on the offensive boards. The Cougars also attempted 24 free throws, making 18, compared to just three attempts for Hutchinson, who made all three.

However, Hutchinson’s defense proved superior. The Blue Dragons held Barton to just 28.8% shooting from the field and 22.7% from three-point range. Hutchinson blocked seven shots and generated 10 Barton turnovers. While Hutchinson shot only 45.3% from the field, its efficiency on fewer possessions was the difference; the Blue Dragons scored 58 points on 60 possessions, while Barton managed 57 points on 66 trips.

The game was sloppy from the outset, with both teams combining for seven misses and three turnovers before Barton’s Pavel Ivanov scored the first basket nearly 90 seconds into play. The Cougars built their early lead despite shooting under 40% in the first quarter, as Hutchinson struggled with offensive rhythm.

Hutchinson visits Dodge City on Dec. 10. Barton hosts Garden City on Dec. 13.
