Community Christian vs Arizona Western
YUMA, Ariz. (Interstat) — The Arizona Western Matadors used a dominant first-quarter performance to overwhelm the Community Christian Saints for the second consecutive night, securing a 97-66 victory in a men’s junior college basketball game Wednesday.
The Matadors, improving to 5-2 overall, erupted for 58 points in the opening period, establishing a commanding 31-point lead from which the Saints never recovered. The win followed a 98-66 triumph for Arizona Western just 24 hours earlier.
Community Christian, which fell to 0-4, was led by a standout individual effort from Sage Gonzalez, who poured in 36 points. Despite his offensive output, the Saints could not counter the Matadors’ early onslaught or their overwhelming advantage on the boards, where Arizona Western held a 63-35 rebounding edge, including 23 offensive rebounds.
Marsai Martinez was a force for the Matadors, recording a double-double with 24 points and 10 rebounds in just 20 minutes of action. His efficiency was emblematic of an Arizona Western offense that operated with precision, scoring 97 points on 83 possessions for an offensive rating of 116.3. By contrast, Community Christian managed an offensive rating of just 78.9.
The Matadors’ offense was a balanced attack. Engel Gutierrez scored 16 points, all in the first half, while Mario Brunetto added 15 points and five rebounds. Balla Kouyate controlled the paint, hauling in a game-high 14 rebounds to go with four points.
For the Saints, Rusty Arandia contributed 13 points, six rebounds and a team-high seven assists. The team struggled with its shooting, converting just 25 of 71 attempts from the floor and only 6 of 12 from the free-throw line.
Arizona Western set the tone immediately, opening the game on a 12-2 run that prompted a Saints timeout less than three minutes into the contest. The Matadors’ lead ballooned throughout the quarter, fueled by a relentless inside presence and transition opportunities.
The Saints found more rhythm in the second quarter, matching the Matadors with 39 points apiece, but the damage from the first period was insurmountable. The loss extends a difficult start to the season for Community Christian, which has lost its four games by an average of 38 points.
Arizona Western continues its homestand on Friday, Dec. 5, against New Mexico Military Institute. Community Christian looks for its first win on the road at Yavapai on the same date.
