Central Arizona vs Hagerstown
HAGERSTOWN, Md. (Interstat) — The Central Arizona Vaqueros snapped a two-game skid with a commanding 77-55 victory over the Hagerstown Hawks in a men’s junior college basketball game Friday night, overcoming significant pregame odds.
The result was a stark reversal of expectations, as Interstat’s ELO system had projected the Hawks with a 69.70 percent probability to win on their home court. Instead, the Vaqueros used a dominant first half to seize control and never looked back, improving their season record to 3-3. Hagerstown fell to 1-2.
Central Arizona established its authority early, exploding for 36 points in the opening quarter while holding Hagerstown to 32. The Vaqueros then tightened their defense significantly in the second quarter, outscoring the Hawks 41-23 to build an insurmountable 77-55 halftime lead. The second half was not played.
The Vaqueros’ efficiency was the story of the game. They scored 77 points on 73 possessions, translating to an offensive rating of 105.7. In contrast, Hagerstown managed just 55 points on 68 possessions for an offensive rating of 80.5, hampered by poor shooting from the floor. The Hawks shot just 17 of 51, a 33.3 percent clip, while Central Arizona connected on 25 of 53 attempts for 47.2 percent.
Tayshaun Jackson led all scorers for Central Arizona, pouring in 22 points in just 23 minutes of action. He was instrumental in the first-quarter surge. Shawn Spencer added 15 points, and Luke Leatherwood recorded a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Brayden Gant contributed 12 points and seven rebounds, while Longar Alor facilitated the offense with a game-high six assists to go with eight rebounds.
For Hagerstown, Najeh Allen was the lone player to reach double figures, finishing with 11 points. Dominic Carr and Jalen Debose each added seven points in the losing effort.
Despite committing 16 turnovers to Hagerstown’s 13, Central Arizona compensated with superior rebounding, holding a 38-26 advantage on the glass. The Vaqueros also showcased a more aggressive defensive presence, recording nine steals and six blocked shots compared to the Hawks’ 10 steals and two blocks.
The game was characterized by a choppy start, with both teams combining for multiple turnovers and missed shots in the opening minutes before Central Arizona found its rhythm and pulled away decisively.
Central Arizona looks to build on the win as it faces Casper at home on Saturday. Hagerstown, seeking to rebound, is scheduled for a game against Cochise, also on Saturday.
