Monroe vs Northwest Florida State

NICEVILLE, Fla. (Interstat) — The Northwest Florida State Raiders remained undefeated Saturday, holding off a persistent Monroe College squad for a 68-62 victory in a men’s junior college basketball game at Raider Arena.

In a contest defined by defensive pressure and offensive struggles, the Raiders improved to 4-0 overall, while the visiting Mustangs fell to 0-2.

The game was a tale of two halves, with both teams locked in a 30-30 stalemate after a frantic first quarter. Monroe’s offense, however, went cold in the second quarter, scoring 32 points against a tougher Northwest Florida State defense that put up 38 to secure the win. The Raiders never trailed after the opening minutes but were unable to put the Mustangs away until the final seconds.

Northwest Florida State’s victory was anchored in superior efficiency. Despite attempting 17 fewer shots than Monroe, the Raiders connected at a 42.3 percent clip from the floor compared to the Mustangs’ 34.8 percent. The three-point line was a key differentiator, with Northwest Florida State making 6 of 18 attempts while Monroe managed just 3 of 22 from beyond the arc.

The Raiders also capitalized on their trips to the free-throw line, making 18 of 31 attempts. Monroe shot 11 of 16 from the stripe. Monroe won the battle on the glass, outrebounding Northwest Florida State 43-39, including a dominant 11-5 advantage on the offensive boards, but it wasn’t enough to overcome their shooting woes.

Justin Burns led a balanced Raiders attack, just missing a double-double with 12 points and 9 rebounds in 31 minutes of action. He was one of four Northwest Florida State players to score in double figures. Jonas Nichols and DJ Shine each contributed 14 points, while Damarion Vann-Kelley added 11.

Braylon Roman orchestrated the Raiders’ offense, dishing out 10 assists to go along with 7 rebounds and 3 points.

For Monroe, Naceiar Kirksey led all scorers with 14 points. Nick Williams posted a strong all-around line of 12 points, 9 rebounds, and 3 assists. Nico Pena and Faquir Mosley each added 11 points for the Mustangs.

The game was a defensive grind from the start, with both teams forcing turnovers and contesting shots. Monroe’s inability to find any consistent rhythm from long range, coupled with Northwest Florida State’s ability to generate points at the free-throw line down the stretch, proved to be the deciding factors.

Northwest Florida State will look to continue its winning streak on the road against Daytona State next Friday. Monroe, still in search of its first win, returns home to face Allegany College of Maryland on November 16.

The final score defied the pregame projection from Interstat, whose game simulator had predicted a 100-100 tie. Their ELO rating system, however, had given the Raiders a 73.6 percent probability of victory, which ultimately proved accurate.
