Arizona Western vs Utah State Eastern

PRICE, Utah (Interstat) — In a high-octane men’s junior college basketball game that defied pregame projections, the Arizona Western Matadors outlasted the Utah State Eastern Eagles 83-78 on Friday night.

The contest, played at Utah State Eastern’s home court, was a tale of two halves, with the Matadors building a significant early lead and then holding off a furious second-half rally from the Eagles. The result improved Arizona Western’s season record to 3-1, while Utah State Eastern fell to 1-2.

The game’s outcome was a stark contrast to the predictions from Interstat, whose game simulator had projected a lopsided Arizona Western victory by 43 points, while its ELO rating system heavily favored Utah State Eastern with an 84.5 percent probability to win.

Arizona Western established control from the opening tip, executing with high efficiency on the offensive end. The Matadors poured in 42 points in the first quarter, shooting effectively from the floor and capitalizing on their possessions. They maintained their offensive output after the break, adding another 41 points in the second quarter to secure the road victory.

Statistically, the game was remarkably close in several categories, but key differences proved decisive. Arizona Western won the battle on the glass, outrebounding Utah State Eastern 35 to 28. A significant part of that advantage came on the offensive boards, where the Matadors grabbed 13 rebounds, leading to crucial second-chance opportunities. Utah State Eastern, by contrast, managed only seven offensive rebounds.

Free throw shooting and fouls also played a pivotal role. Arizona Western attempted 20 free throws, making 14, while Utah State Eastern went to the line just 13 times, converting nine. The Eagles were whistled for 20 total fouls compared to 13 for the Matadors.

Offensively, Arizona Western operated with slightly greater efficiency. The Matadors scored their 83 points over 70 possessions, resulting in an offensive rating of 117.7. Utah State Eastern posted an offensive rating of 109.9, scoring 78 points from 69 possessions. Both teams shot nearly identically from the field, with Arizona Western going 30 for 63 and Utah State Eastern shooting 29 for 61. From beyond the arc, each team made nine three-pointers.

Isaac Castagnetto led all scorers for Utah State Eastern, pouring in 22 points in 29 minutes of action. He was supported by Bowen Davies and Ike Palmer, who each scored 14 points. Palmer also dished out a game-high seven assists.

Arizona Western’s attack was more balanced. Engel Gutierrez led the Matadors with 17 points and 3 assists. Key contributions came from Marsai Mason with 12 points and 6 rebounds, and a breakout performance from the bench by Mario Brunetto, who scored 12 points in just 10 minutes of play. Nikola Aleksic also provided a spark off the pine with 12 points.

The game began at a frantic pace, with Utah State Eastern’s Kayin Turner and Arizona Western’s Engel Gutierrez trading early three-pointers. The Matadors, however, began to create separation midway through the first quarter, with a tip-in from Marsai Mason just before the quarter’s end giving them a six-point lead.

Utah State Eastern mounted a determined comeback in the second quarter, outscoring Arizona Western 42 to 41 in the period. A jump shot from Ike Palmer followed by a free throw brought the Eagles within striking distance, but the Matadors consistently answered each Utah State Eastern run. A critical jump shot from Engel Gutierrez with just over 11 minutes remaining helped Arizona Western regain its footing and ultimately secure the five-point win.

Arizona Western looks to continue its momentum on the road Saturday against Snow College. Utah State Eastern, seeking to get back to .500, will host Eastern Arizona on Saturday.
