Western Nebraska vs Cowley
ARKANSAS CITY, Kan. (Interstat) — The Cowley Tigers opened their season with a decisive 80-58 victory over the winless Western Nebraska Cougars in a men’s junior college basketball game Friday night.
Leslie Owens Jr. led a balanced and efficient Tigers attack, scoring 17 points and adding six rebounds and five assists in just 24 minutes of play. Cowley’s depth was on full display as six players scored in double figures, including Chase Robinson, Kyden Thompson, Marcus Smith, Roman Miller, and Xavier Vickerstaff, who each contributed between 10 and 11 points.
The game was characterized by Cowley’s control of the boards and their ability to capitalize on free throw opportunities. The Tigers dominated the rebounding battle, pulling down 43 total rebounds to Western Nebraska’s 25, which included 13 offensive rebounds that led to crucial second-chance points. From the foul line, Cowley was nearly flawless, converting 22 of 25 attempts. In stark contrast, the Cougars struggled, making only 12 of their 22 free throws.
Western Nebraska, which fell to 0-3 on the young season, was led by Viktor Lukic-Gavric and Isaiah St. Preux, who each scored 12 points. Amare Jackson added nine points and six rebounds for the Cougars. The team’s offensive struggles were evident as they shot just 35 percent from the field and committed 15 turnovers.
Despite a competitive start that saw the Cougars take an early lead on a Viktor Lukic-Gavric layup, Cowley quickly seized control. The Tigers closed the first quarter on a 13-4 run, capped by a Leslie Owens Jr. layup in the final seconds, to take a 34-29 lead into the second period.
The Tigers then put the game out of reach with a dominant second-quarter performance, outscoring the Cougars 46-29. Cowley’s defense tightened, forcing Western Nebraska into difficult shots and capitalizing on turnovers to fuel their transition game. The Tigers’ offensive rating of 111.3 points per 100 possessions dwarfed the Cougars’ mark of 77.9, underscoring the gap in offensive execution.
The victory was a strong start for a Cowley team that was projected as a significant favorite by Interstat’s ELO system, which gave them a 70.8 percent probability to win. The Tigers will look to build on this performance when they host Northeastern Oklahoma A&M on Saturday.
Western Nebraska, still searching for its first win, continues a difficult road trip, facing Butler (Kan.) on Saturday. The Cougars’ early-season schedule has been challenging, with previous losses to Dodge City and Snow.
