Indian Hills vs Dodge City
DODGE CITY, Kan. (Interstat) — The Indian Hills Warriors remained undefeated Tuesday night, overpowering the Dodge City Conquistadors in a men’s junior college basketball game that defied pregame projections.
The Warriors, improving to 3-0, built a substantial 16-point lead by halftime and never looked back, securing a 93-73 road victory. The outcome was a surprise to statistical models, including Interstat’s ELO system, which had given Dodge City a 62.7 percent probability to win, and its game simulator, which had projected a 100-100 tie.
Indian Hills established control early, opening the game on a decisive run. The first half was defined by the Warriors’ efficient offense and a series of costly Conquistador turnovers. Sawyer Mayhugh set the tone for Indian Hills, scoring the game’s first points on a jump shot just seconds after a Dodge City turnover on the opening possession.
The Warriors’ offensive attack was multifaceted. Mayhugh finished as the game’s high scorer, while KJ LaMonte provided a consistent scoring punch, particularly with a string of layups in the latter part of the first half. Taj Au-Duke was a disruptive force on both ends, contributing steals and baskets in transition.
Despite the lopsided score, Dodge City found moments of offensive rhythm, primarily through Derrick Rivers and Christian Brockett. Rivers attacked the basket and drew fouls, converting multiple times from the free-throw line, while Brockett facilitated the offense and capitalized on fast-break opportunities. However, the Conquistadors struggled to string together stops defensively to mount a sustained challenge.
The Warriors’ dominance was also evident on the glass, where Xavier Wilson controlled the paint. Wilson secured a double-double, anchoring Indian Hills’ interior defense and creating second-chance opportunities. Chiang Ring also provided significant rebounding support off the bench.
The Conquistadors, who fell to 1-1, were plagued by ball-handling issues throughout the contest. Jayvion Nurse and the Dodge City backcourt committed several turnovers that the Warriors swiftly converted into points, preventing any significant comeback attempt in the second half. Brad Johnson and Richard Rojas provided defensive energy for the Conquistadors, combining for steals and blocks, but the team’s offense could not keep pace.
Indian Hills, coming off wins against Cloud County and Pratt, will look to continue its strong start when it hosts Malcolm X on Friday. Dodge City, which opened its season with a win over Western Nebraska, will aim to rebound on the road Friday at Lamar.
