Southern Nevada vs Colorado Northwestern
RANGELY, Colo. (Interstat) — In a high-scoring and statistically anomalous men’s junior college basketball game Saturday, the Colorado Northwestern Spartans evened their season record by outlasting the College of Southern Nevada Coyotes 103 to 73.
The result was a stark reversal from the previous night, where Southern Nevada had secured a 102 to 93 victory over the same Spartans team. Both teams now stand at 1-1 across all competitions.
Despite the lopsided final score, the contest was a tale of contrasting offensive philosophies. The Spartans’ victory was fueled by a staggering 41 free throw attempts, converting 29, while the Coyotes attempted just 12 from the line. Southern Nevada kept the game competitive for stretches by dominating the boards, outrebounding Colorado Northwestern 48 to 28 and securing 15 offensive rebounds to the Spartans’ 4.
The game opened at a frantic pace, with both teams trading baskets. Colorado Northwestern’s Cooper Kesler connected on an early 3-pointer to open the scoring, and the teams remained tightly contested through the first ten minutes. The Spartans began to create separation late in the first half, capitalizing on Coyotes turnovers and converting at the free-throw line to build a double-digit lead by halftime.
Southern Nevada struggled to contain the Spartans’ balanced attack in the second half. While the Coyotes shot a respectable 48 percent from the floor, their 22 turnovers proved costly, leading to easy transition opportunities for Colorado Northwestern. The Spartans, though shooting a lower percentage from the field at 42 percent, consistently found ways to score, either at the rim or by drawing fouls.
Key performances underscored the team efforts. For the victorious Spartans, Carter Killian orchestrated the offense with a double-double, dishing out 10 assists to go with 10 points. Gibson Walton provided a strong interior presence with 16 points and 8 rebounds, while Trey Johnson added 16 points and 5 assists.
The Coyotes were led by Jason Parent, who turned in a stellar individual effort with 28 points and 9 rebounds in 37 minutes of action. Rudolfs Svitins provided significant support with 20 points and 9 rebounds. Raijon Dispensa controlled the glass, pulling down a game-high 10 rebounds.
The outcome defied the pregame projections from Interstat, whose game simulator had predicted a 100-100 tie and whose ELO system gave Colorado Northwestern only a 56 percent probability of winning.
Southern Nevada looks to rebound on November 21 when they travel to face Utah State Eastern. Colorado Northwestern is set for a quick turnaround, playing at Yavapai later Saturday. The two teams are scheduled to meet again on November 22 in Rangely.
