Missouri Baptist vs Central Methodist
FAYETTE, Mo. (Interstat) — A pivotal NAIA men’s basketball matchup with postseason implications is set for Wednesday night when the Central Methodist Eagles host the Missouri Baptist Spartans at Puckett Field House.
Both teams enter with nearly identical records. The visiting Spartans are 16-9 overall, while the Eagles sit at 16-10. The tight Heart of America Athletic Conference standings add weight to the contest, as does a recent head-to-head result. Just over a month ago, on Jan. 14, Missouri Baptist defeated Central Methodist 67-59 in St. Louis.
The Eagles will lean heavily on the high-scoring prowess of guard Tyson Oghene. He enters on a torrid offensive streak, averaging 23.6 points over his last seven games. Oghene is coming off a 28-point performance in a loss to Grand View on Saturday and has scored 17 or more points in nine consecutive contests, including a 28-point outing in an overtime win over Culver-Stockton on Feb. 11.
Missouri Baptist counters with a more balanced attack, guided by guard Preston Fortner. While not a volume scorer, Fortner contributes across the board. He is coming off a strong all-around performance in a win over Graceland on Saturday, posting 11 points, seven rebounds and six assists. The Spartans have also received consistent production from Merquiche Lewis (18 points, six rebounds vs. Graceland) and Javaris Moye (14 points vs. Graceland).
Central Methodist seeks to protect its home court and avenge January’s loss. The Eagles’ offense runs through Oghene, but they will need support from Raphael Gay (15 points vs. Grand View) and Isaiah Bonaparte to secure a crucial conference victory.
For Missouri Baptist, building on the momentum of their current two-game winning streak is key. Containing Oghene and controlling the tempo will be central to their game plan as they aim for a regular-season sweep.
Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
