Doane (NE) vs Northwestern (Iowa)

ORANGE CITY, Iowa (Interstat) — A surging Northwestern (Iowa) team, led by the nation’s hottest scorer, will host a struggling Doane squad seeking an upset when the Red Raiders and Tigers meet in a key NAIA men’s basketball matchup Saturday at the Bultman Center.

The Red Raiders (16-6) enter on a four-game winning streak, powered by an offensive explosion from guard Jalen Langsy. In his last four contests, Langsy has averaged 37.8 points per game, including a 48-point performance in a 105-86 rout of Dordt on Jan. 28. For the season, Northwestern averages 90.5 points per game.

Doane (7-11) looks to halt a three-game skid, with each loss coming by four points or fewer. The Tigers fell 79-78 to Morningside on Jan. 24 despite a 23-point effort from forward Crayton Macholan. Macholan is a key figure for Doane, having scored in double figures in three of his last six games.

History adds intrigue to the contest. In their first meeting this season on Nov. 15, Doane handed Northwestern a 75-71 defeat in Crete, Nebraska. The Tigers will need a similar defensive effort to slow Langsy and contain a Red Raiders offense that has topped 100 points three times this season.

Northwestern’s supporting cast poses a significant threat. Forward Jesse Van Kalsbeek posted 24 points and eight rebounds against Dordt, and center Brennan Reid notched a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds.

Doane’s recent woes have been marked by narrow defeats, including a one-point loss to Waldorf and a three-point loss to Mount Marty earlier this month. Sustaining offensive execution against a high-powered opponent will be critical.

The game tips off at 3 p.m. CST on Jan. 31 in Orange City. Following this contest, Northwestern will visit Briar Cliff on Feb. 4, while Doane will host Concordia (Neb.) on the same date.
