Waldorf vs Doane (NE)
CRETE, Neb. (Interstat) — In a stunning reversal of fortune, the Waldorf Warriors, owners of the NAIA’s most challenging season, snapped a two-game skid and secured just their second victory by edging the Doane Tigers 83-82 in a men’s basketball game Saturday.
The game, played before a home crowd at Doane’s Haddix Center, defied statistical projections that heavily favored the Tigers. The outcome was decided in the final second when Waldorf’s Krys Watley calmly sank two free throws to break an 82-82 tie. The free throws came after a foul by Doane’s Crayton Macholan with no time remaining on the clock, following a chaotic sequence in the closing moments.
The most critical phase of the contest was the game’s final minute, which saw three lead changes and set the stage for the dramatic finish. With Waldorf leading 83-80 after a Conner Aldridge layup, Doane’s Trevon Beckman, who led all scorers with 28 points, hit a clutch 3-pointer with 44 seconds left to tie the game at 83. Waldorf then turned the ball over on its ensuing possession, giving Doane a chance to hold for a final shot. However, Casen Chaney was stripped by the Warriors’ defense, leading to a foul on Justus Gardiner with 14 seconds left. After a Doane timeout, Gardiner missed a potential go-ahead layup, and Chaney was fouled on the rebound attempt with 4 seconds left. He made both free throws to put Doane ahead 82-83, setting up the final inbound play that resulted in Watley’s game-winning foul shots.
The contest was a tale of two contrasting halves. Waldorf dominated the opening period, building a 42-30 lead by shooting 53.7% from the field and forcing 12 Doane turnovers. The Warriors extended their lead to 18 points early in the second half before the Tigers mounted a relentless comeback. Doane outscored Waldorf 52-41 after halftime, fueled by Beckman’s scoring and a 15-5 advantage in offensive rebounds that generated 15 second-chance points. Despite being outrebounded 36-22 overall, Waldorf’s efficiency proved decisive. The Warriors shot 53.7% from the field and 45.8% from 3-point range, offsetting Doane’s significant rebounding edge.
Aldridge led Waldorf with 26 points and five rebounds, continuing his strong individual season. Nick Graves added 16 points, all in the first half, and Watley finished with 13 points, five rebounds, five assists and the decisive free throws. Cornelius Porter Jr. facilitated the offense with nine assists.
For Doane, Beckman’s 28-point effort was complemented by Chaney’s 14 points and nine rebounds. Jonan Claussen also grabbed nine rebounds, and Jack Wilson contributed 10 points and five assists.
The victory improved Waldorf’s record to 2-12, while Doane fell to 6-8. According to pregame analytics from Interstat’s ELO system, Doane had been projected with an 87.3% probability to win.
Waldorf will look to build on the upset when it visits Dakota Wesleyan on Wednesday. Doane aims to regroup on the road at Midland the same night. The two teams are scheduled to meet again in Forest City, Iowa, on Feb. 14.
