UHSP vs Fisk (TN)
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Interstat) — Two men’s NAIA basketball teams seeking to reverse lengthy early-season slides will meet Saturday when the Fisk Bulldogs host UHSP.
The game at Henderson A. Johnson Gymnasium features a pair of programs with identical 1-10 records, though Fisk will have had a significant rest advantage. The Bulldogs last played on Dec. 18, a 72-67 home loss to Tennessee Southern. UHSP (1-11) is playing the second leg of a back-to-back, coming off a 105-69 road defeat at Bethel (Tenn.) on Friday night.
Both teams have struggled to find consistent form. Fisk’s lone victory came decisively, an 83-56 home win over Crowley’s Ridge on Dec. 2. They have endured several narrow losses, including two in overtime: 99-97 at Faulkner on Oct. 24 and 88-87 to Voorhees University on Nov. 20.
UHSP snapped a seven-game season-opening losing streak with a 72-70 home win over Oakland City on Dec. 11. Since then, the team has dropped four straight, including a one-point, 96-95 loss to Mission University on Dec. 15. In their most recent outing against Bethel, Mitch Seay recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Lucious Jackson added 11 points and Simeon Williams II scored 11.
The extended break for Fisk could provide a freshness edge against a traveling UHSP squad. The Bulldogs’ schedule shows a challenging stretch ahead, with games against Stillman and Rust next week before a rematch at Voorhees.
For UHSP, this contest begins a string of four consecutive road games. They will visit Crowley’s Ridge on Jan. 8 and Williams Baptist on Jan. 10 before returning home.
Saturday’s matchup represents one of the better opportunities for either team to secure a rare win and build momentum as conference play deepens. Tipoff is scheduled for Saturday afternoon.
