Illinois vs. Connecticut

Illinois, Connecticut Set for National Semifinal Clash

INDIANAPOLIS (Interstat) — A spot in the national championship game will be on the line Saturday when the top-seeded Connecticut Huskies and fourth-seeded Illinois Fighting Illini meet in the second men’s NCAA Tournament semifinal at Lucas Oil Stadium.

The Huskies (33-5), the defending national champions, enter on a six-game winning streak and have not lost since a 72-52 defeat at Saint John’s on March 14. They advanced with a tense 73-72 victory at Duke in the Elite Eight, powered by a 26-point, four-block performance from junior forward Tarris Reed. Reed has averaged 21.3 points over his last six games, providing a consistent offensive force for a balanced UConn squad seeking its third title in four years.

Illinois (28-8) has won seven of its last eight, including a 71-59 win over Iowa and a 65-55 road victory at Houston to reach its first Final Four since 2005. The Illini are led by dynamic guard Keaton Wagler, who is averaging 17.1 points over his last seven contests and scored 25 in the regional final. He is supported by forwards Andrej Stojakovic and Tomislav Ivisic, who combined for 30 points against Iowa.

The teams met earlier this season in nonconference play, with Connecticut securing a 74-61 home win on Nov. 28, 2025. The Huskies have won the last three meetings overall.

Despite Connecticut’s pedigree and superior record, Illinois has been installed as a slight 1.5-point favorite by sportsbooks, with an over/under of 140 points. The game will tip off at approximately 8:49 p.m. EDT following the first semifinal between Gonzaga and North Carolina.

The matchup pits Illinois’s high-powered offense, which has scored 80 or more points 17 times this season, against a stout Connecticut defense that has held 10 opponents under 60 points. How Wagler navigates UConn’s perimeter pressure and whether Reed can dominate inside will be critical factors.

The winner will advance to Monday night’s national championship game.
