VCU vs. Illinois

GREENVILLE, S.C. (Interstat) — A surging VCU squad riding a nine-game winning streak will face a high-powered Illinois team in a second-round NCAA Tournament men’s basketball game Saturday.

The 10th-seeded Rams (28-7), champions of the Atlantic 10 Conference, arrive after an 82-78 overtime upset at second-seeded North Carolina on Thursday. The seventh-seeded Fighting Illini (25-8), an at-large selection from the Big Ten, are coming off a dominant 105-70 first-round victory over Penn.

The matchup at Bon Secours Wellness Arena features two of the tournament’s hottest guards. VCU is led by sophomore Terrence Hill, who scored 34 points and dished five assists in the win over the Tar Heels. Over his last eight games, Hill is averaging 17.8 points and 2.9 assists, providing consistent offensive firepower for the Rams.

Illinois counters with junior David Mirkovic, who poured in 29 points in just 28 minutes against Penn. Mirkovic has scored 19 or more points in four of his last five contests, showcasing his ability to carry the Illini’s offense. His backcourt mate, Keaton Wagler, added 18 points and seven assists in the opening round.

VCU’s resilience will be tested. The Rams have won six of their last nine games by single digits, including four victories by five points or fewer, demonstrating a knack for closing in tight situations. Their defense, which held opponents to 62.7 points per game during the winning streak, faces its toughest test in weeks.

Illinois presents a stark contrast in style. The Illini average 83.1 points per game, ranking among the nation’s top offenses, but have shown vulnerability on defense, allowing 80 or more points in three of their last six games, including two overtime losses.

The game hinges on tempo. VCU will aim to control pace with its pressure defense, while Illinois will look to push the ball and utilize its offensive depth. The battle between Hill and Mirkovic could dictate which team advances to the Sweet 16.

Tipoff is scheduled for approximately 5:15 p.m. EDT Saturday, with television coverage on CBS.
