Saint Joseph`s at California

BERKELEY, Calif. (Interstat) — Two surging teams on the NCAA tournament bubble will meet Sunday when the Saint Joseph’s Hawks visit the California Golden Bears in a critical nonconference men’s basketball matchup at Haas Pavilion.

The game, scheduled for March 22, 2026, features teams with nearly identical records. Saint Joseph’s (23-11) arrives from the Atlantic 10 having won seven of its last eight games, including a 69-64 road victory at Colorado State on Wednesday. California (22-10), out of the Atlantic Coast Conference, has won four of its last five, most recently a 91-73 home win over Illinois-Chicago.

The contest hinges on a clash of star guards. Saint Joseph’s is led by dynamic playmaker Derek Simpson, who is averaging 15.1 points and 6.6 assists over his last seven games. His ability to score and facilitate, evidenced by a 23-point, 8-assist performance against George Mason and a 16-point, 9-assist outing against La Salle, drives the Hawks’ offense.

California counters with high-scoring guard Chris Bell, who is coming off a career-high 31-point outburst in the win over UIC. Bell has topped 20 points in three of his last six games, providing the Golden Bears with a consistent perimeter scoring threat. Support comes from guard Justin Pippen, who added 18 points and six assists in the latest win.

Both teams have shown resilience down the stretch. Saint Joseph’s only loss since Feb. 10 was a 77-64 defeat at VCU. California’s recent losses were narrow road contests at Florida State (95-89) and Wake Forest (80-73).

The setting adds another layer, as the Golden Bears enjoy a strong home-court advantage at Haas Pavilion, where they are 14-3 this season. Saint Joseph’s, however, has proven capable on the road, with key away wins at Davidson, Rhode Island, and Colorado State in recent weeks.

With postseason implications at stake, the game is expected to be tightly contested. California has been installed as a 5.5-point favorite, with the over/under set at 148.5 points. The outcome could significantly impact the final at-large bid discussions before Selection Sunday.
