Furman Paladins vs. Connecticut Huskies
Furman Paladins (22-12) vs. Connecticut Huskies (29-5)
PHILADELPHIA (Interstat) — A surging mid-major meets a postseason-tested powerhouse when the 12th-seeded Furman Paladins face the fourth-seeded Connecticut Huskies in an NCAA Division I men’s basketball playoff game Friday at Xfinity Mobile Arena.
The Paladins (22-12), champions of the Southern Conference, enter on a three-game winning streak, including an 86-81 victory at Samford on March 7 to secure their automatic bid. They are led by guard Cooper Bowser, who averaged 16.2 points over his last six games and scored 21 in the regular-season finale, a 76-61 win at East Tennessee State on March 9.
Furman’s path, however, is a daunting one. They face a Connecticut program (29-5) accustomed to deep March runs and featuring one of the nation’s most balanced attacks. The Huskies, the Big East regular-season champions, stumbled in their conference tournament with a 72-52 loss at Saint John’s on March 14 but had won 10 of their previous 11 games.
A key matchup will be in the frontcourt, where Furman’s Bowser will contend with Connecticut’s versatile forward Tarris Reed. Reed is coming off a 17-point performance against Saint John’s and has been a consistent force, averaging 14.3 points over his last seven contests. His ability to score, pass and protect the rim — he had six blocks against Saint John’s on Feb. 25 — presents a multifaceted challenge.
The Huskies’ defense, which held opponents to 65.2 points per game during the regular season, will aim to disrupt Furman’s rhythm. The Paladins have shown offensive potency, scoring 80 or more points in four of their last nine games, but have also been prone to road lapses, including an 86-67 loss at Western Carolina on Feb. 28.
Connecticut holds a significant edge in experience and pedigree on the national stage. The game’s over/under is set at 137 points, suggesting expectations for a moderately paced, defensive-minded playoff contest.
Tip-off is scheduled for Friday, March 20, 2026, in Philadelphia. The winner will advance to the second round of the tournament.
