Saint John’s Dominates Northern Iowa in NCAA Playoff Opener
SAN DIEGO (Interstat) — The Saint John’s Red Storm, asserting their dominance from the opening tip, overwhelmed the Northern Iowa Panthers with a decisive 79-53 victory in a men’s NCAA Division I playoff game Friday night at Frontwave Arena.
The Red Storm, improving to 29-6, advanced with a performance defined by defensive intensity and a blistering first-half offensive display. The Panthers, who finish their season at 23-13, were never able to recover from an early onslaught.
Saint John’s set the tone immediately, opening the game on a 10-0 run. Bryce Hopkins of Oak Park, Illinois, ignited the surge with a 3-pointer just 56 seconds into the contest. The Red Storm’s pressure forced two quick Northern Iowa turnovers, which Oziyah Sellers of Hayward, California, and Dillon Mitchell of Tampa, Florida, converted into easy baskets, prompting a Northern Iowa timeout less than three minutes into the game.
The stoppage did little to slow the Red Storm. Their lead ballooned to 19 points midway through the first half and reached 47-28 by halftime. Saint John’s shot efficiently in the opening period and its defense was suffocating, blocking four shots and limiting Northern Iowa’s offensive rhythm.
Northern Iowa showed brief signs of life to start the second half, scoring the first four points to cut the deficit to 15. But Saint John’s quickly snuffed out any notion of a comeback. A steal and layup by Trey Campbell of Cedar Falls, Iowa, made it 49-38 with just over 15 minutes to play, but the Panthers would get no closer. The Red Storm responded with a 7-0 run to push the lead back to 18 and cruised to the finish.
The most important part of the game was unquestionably the opening 10-0 run by Saint John’s, which established immediate control. It forced Northern Iowa into a reactive posture from which it never recovered. The Panthers, a team accustomed to dictating tempo, were instead scrambling from the outset, a deficit compounded by Saint John’s sustained defensive pressure throughout the first half that built an insurmountable lead.
Zuby Ejiofor, a 6-foot-9, 245-pound forward from Garland, Texas, anchored the Saint John’s effort with 14 points, four blocked shots and two assists in 27 minutes, altering countless other attempts near the rim. Hopkins finished with 13 points, while Sellers added 11. Ian Jackson of the Bronx, New York, provided a key spark off the bench with nine points in just nine minutes, including a crucial second-half 3-pointer that helped halt Northern Iowa’s last push.
For Northern Iowa, Campbell led the way with 14 points in 37 minutes. Leon Bond of Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, scored 12 points, and Will Hornseth of De Pere, Wisconsin, contributed 10 points. The Panthers, who entered the game having won eight of their last nine, were held to their second-lowest scoring output of the season.
Saint John’s dominated several key statistical areas, scoring 13 points off 11 Northern Iowa turnovers while committing only seven of their own. The Red Storm also recorded seven blocked shots, with Ejiofor and Mitchell each swatting two.
Saint John’s will await its next opponent, while Northern Iowa’s season concludes. According to Interstat’s ELO system, Saint John’s was projected with a 93.8 percent probability to win the contest.
