Alabama Pulls Away From Hofstra in Second Half of NCAA Playoff Game
TAMPA, Fla. (Interstat) — In a game defined by a singular, explosive second-half performance, the Alabama Crimson Tide overpowered the Hofstra Pride 90-70 in a men’s NCAA Division I playoff game Friday afternoon at Amalie Arena.
A crowd of 17,769 saw the Crimson Tide, after a tightly contested first half, unleash a devastating 53-point second-half onslaught to pull away decisively. The victory improved Alabama’s season record to 24-9, while Hofstra’s campaign ended at 24-11.
The most important part of the game was Alabama’s overwhelming acceleration after halftime. Leading by just two points at the break, 37-35, the Crimson Tide immediately established a faster, more physical pace. They opened the second half on a 12-4 run, fueled by transition opportunities and interior dominance, to seize a double-digit lead from which Hofstra never recovered. Alabama’s 19 fastbreak points and 38 points in the paint underscored a systemic breakdown of the Pride’s defense as the game progressed.
Alabama’s catalyst was sophomore guard Labaron Philon. The Mobile native delivered a masterful performance, scoring 29 points and dishing out seven assists in 36 minutes. His ability to penetrate and finish at the rim or find open shooters dismantled Hofstra’s schemes. He was complemented by forward Taylor Bol Bowen, who added 15 points and three blocks, and a formidable frontcourt duo of Aiden Sherrell and Amari Allen, who scored 15 and 11 points respectively.
Hofstra, the visiting team, fought valiantly and was led by guard Preston Edmead’s game-high 24 points. Cruz Davis contributed 14 points and six assists, and German Plotnikov added 12 points. The Pride matched Alabama’s intensity for the first 20 minutes, trading baskets and entering halftime knotted in a gritty battle. However, they could not sustain their offensive efficiency or contain Alabama’s multifaceted attack after the intermission, scoring an identical 35 points in each half while the Tide surged.
The game’s statistical narrative highlighted Alabama’s superior execution. While both teams scored 14 points off turnovers, Alabama’s advantages in fastbreak points and points in the paint proved decisive. The Crimson Tide also capitalized more consistently at the free-throw line during critical stretches to extend their lead.
Entering the contest, Alabama was a significant pregame favorite and lived up to that billing with their second-half display. The total score of 160 points narrowly surpassed the over/under line of 160.5.
For Alabama, the win advances them in the postseason bracket. Hofstra’s season concludes after a successful run that included notable non-conference victories and a strong finish in Colonial Athletic Association play. The Pride’s next scheduled game is against Akron on Sunday, also in Tampa.
