Kent State at Illinois State

Preview: Kent State at Illinois State, March 18, 2026

NORMAL, Ill. (Interstat) — Two teams trending in opposite directions will meet Wednesday when the Illinois State Redbirds host the Kent State Golden Flashes in a nonconference men’s basketball matchup at Redbird Arena.

Kent State (24-9) enters having lost two of its last three games, including a 75-68 defeat at Akron last Friday. The Golden Flashes had previously won five straight. Illinois State (20-12) has dropped two of its last three, most recently a 74-52 home loss to Northern Iowa on March 6.

The Redbirds have been installed as a 6-point favorite, with an over/under of 152 points.

Kent State will lean on guard Rob Whaley, who has scored in double figures in six of his last seven games. He led the Golden Flashes with 15 points in the loss to Akron. Over this recent stretch, Whaley is averaging 11.1 points per game.

Illinois State counters with guard Johnny Kinziger, who has been a steady presence in the backcourt. Kinziger is coming off a 16-point, 6-assist performance in a win over Belmont on March 1 and has averaged 10.4 points over his last five contests.

The Golden Flashes have shown offensive firepower, scoring 86 or more points in three of their last six games, including a 102-point outburst at Northern Illinois on March 3. Their defense, however, has been inconsistent, allowing 92 points in a loss to Akron on Feb. 27 and 75 in the recent rematch.

Illinois State’s results have been volatile. The Redbirds followed an 18-point win over Murray State on Feb. 18 with a 27-point road loss to Illinois-Chicago two days later. They have struggled offensively at times, scoring 60 points or fewer in three of their last seven games.

Kent State holds a significant edge in overall record, but Illinois State will have the home-court advantage at Redbird Arena, where they are 12-4 this season. The game marks the final nonconference tune-up for both programs before potential postseason play.

Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. CDT Wednesday.
