Illinois Routs Penn in NCAA Tournament Opener
GREENVILLE, S.C. (Interstat) — The Illinois men’s basketball team unleashed a dominant second-half performance to overwhelm Penn 105-70 in the first round of the NCAA tournament on Thursday night at the Bi-Lo Center.
A 10-point halftime lead ballooned into a 35-point rout as the Fighting Illini outscored the Quakers 65-40 after intermission, showcasing a level of offensive firepower that proved far too much for the Ivy League champions. The victory advanced Illinois, which improved to 25-8, while Penn’s season ended at 18-12.
The game’s decisive stretch came early in the second half, turning a competitive contest into a runaway. Leading 40-30 at the break, Illinois opened the final period on a 17-4 surge over the first five minutes. The run was fueled by the inside-outside combination of David Mirkovic and Keaton Wagler, who consistently broke down the Penn defense. Mirkovic, a 6-foot-9 forward from Montenegro, scored on a layup and a three-pointer during the burst, while Wagler added a three-pointer of his own and set up teammates with crisp passing. The spurt pushed the lead to 57-34 and effectively ended any realistic hope of a Quaker comeback.
Penn, which had relied on grit and timely shooting to win close games throughout its season, including two overtime victories in its conference tournament, had no answer for Illinois’ size, depth, and scoring balance. The Quakers were led by Michael Zanoni’s 20 points and 14 from Cam Thrower, but they struggled to generate consistent offense against the longer, more athletic Illini defense.
Illinois, meanwhile, operated with surgical efficiency. Mirkovic was the focal point, finishing with a game-high 29 points on 11-of-16 shooting from the field, adding three assists. His activity on the offensive glass, securing six offensive rebounds, created numerous second-chance opportunities and typified Illinois’ physical advantage.
Wagler, a 6-foot-6 guard from Shawnee, Kansas, orchestrated the attack masterfully, posting 18 points and seven assists. His backcourt mate, Kylan Boswell of Champaign, added 13 points. The Illini’s depth was on full display, with four reserves scoring at least nine points. Ben Humrichous and Tomislav Ivisic each contributed 12 points, while Andrej Stojakovic added nine. The 7-foot-1 Ivisic, from Croatia, also provided a formidable rim-protecting presence.
The first half offered Penn a glimpse of possibility. The Quakers hung tough early, trailing just 18-15 midway through the period after a three-pointer from TJ Power. Illinois then began to create separation with a 12-2 run, keyed by three-pointers from Wagler and Mirkovic, to build a 30-17 advantage. Penn responded with a 9-2 spurt of its own, capped by a Lucas-Allan Lueth three-pointer and a steal and layup from Lueth just before halftime, to cut the deficit to 40-30 at the intermission.
Any momentum Penn carried into the locker room was extinguished by Illinois’ blistering start to the second half. The Illini shot a scorching 65 percent from the field after halftime, compared to Penn’s 40 percent, and assisted on 15 of their 25 second-half baskets. The Illini also dominated the rebounding battle 42-28 for the game.
The game drew a crowd of 14,092 to the neutral-site venue. Illinois entered the contest as a heavy favorite, a prediction borne out by the lopsided final score and the total points surpassing the pregame over/under line. The Fighting Illini will look to carry this offensive momentum into their second-round matchup.
For Penn, the loss concluded a season marked by resilience, including recent overtime wins over Harvard and Yale to secure the Ivy League’s automatic bid. The Quakers’ tournament appearance was their first since 2018.
